Dental cleaning and polishing: when do you need it and how often?

4 min read

Many people brush twice a day and are still surprised when their dentist finds tartar. Home care is essential, but plaque that sits where the brush cannot reach hardens into tartar (calculus), which only professional instruments can remove.

Cleaning vs polishing

Scaling removes hardened deposits above and below the gumline. Polishing then smooths the tooth surface and lifts surface stains from coffee, tea and smoking, so new deposits build up more slowly.

Signs you may need a cleaning

Bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath despite good care, yellow or brown deposits near the gumline, or a rough feel on the teeth. Any one of these is reason enough for a check-up.

How often?

Every six months is the common rule, but it is not fixed for everyone. Smokers, people with gum disease, diabetes or braces may need visits closer together; healthy gums with good home care may allow longer gaps. Your dentist sets the right interval after examining you.

What happens during the visit?

A quick gum and tooth check, ultrasonic and fine hand scaling, then polishing with a special paste. Most sessions take 30 to 60 minutes depending on buildup.

Does it hurt or weaken teeth?

It is usually comfortable; inflamed gums may feel tender temporarily. The idea that cleaning scratches or weakens teeth is a myth — the instruments target deposits, not healthy tooth. Spaces felt after cleaning were opened by gum inflammation the tartar was masking.

Does cleaning whiten teeth?

It removes surface stains and restores your natural tooth color, but it is not bleaching. Many patients are happy with the cleaner, brighter look after polishing alone.

Afterwards

Mild cold sensitivity or slight bleeding for a day or two is normal and temporary. Brushing twice daily and flossing keeps the result longer.
